Obverse description Right-facing bust of Emperor Gratian, pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed, rendered in the late Roman imperial style characteristic of the Theodosian period. The pearl diadem is rendered with fine detail, with individual beads clearly delineated across the brow. The emperor's features are depicted with a youthful countenance, the neck and shoulders showing both the military cuirass and a draped paludamentum. The encircling obverse legend D N GRATIANVS P F AVG runs along the periphery in bold Latin capitals.
