Galerius struck this issue as Augustus of the East following the abdication of Diocletian and Maximian in 305 — the first planned imperial succession in Roman history, and one that almost immediately began to collapse. The London mint was operating under the authority of Constantius I at this point, making western GENIO issues bearing Galerius's titulature a product of the brief, uneasy cooperation between the new Augusti before the system fractured entirely after Constantius died at Eboracum in 306.
