Additional information

Galerius struck this issue as Augustus of the East following the abdication of Diocletian and Maximian in May 305 — one of the few genuinely voluntary transfers of power in Roman imperial history. The Siscia mint was among the most active western production centers during the tetrarchic period, and the GENIO POPVLI ROMANI type was the workhorse denomination of the reformed coinage system Diocletian had imposed in 294. Within months of this coin's production, the entire tetrarchic succession scheme was already fracturing under the competing claims of Maxentius and Constantine.
