The encircling legend GENIO POPV-LI ROMANI is distributed across the field. No mintmark appears in the exergue for this particular issue from the Londinium mint (RIC VI, 34). The composition reflects the standardized Tetrarchic reverse type introduced under Diocletian's monetary reforms. |

Struck at Londinium during the First Tetrarchy, this nummus falls within the brief window when Galerius still bore the title Caesar under Diocletian — a subordinate rank he held with evident frustration before his elevation to Augustus in 305. The London mint had been reopened around 296 specifically to supply the western campaigns of Constantius, and its output during this tetrarchic phase is notably uneven, with RIC VI 34 among the better-documented types from the officina sequence.
Galerius is credited by ancient sources as the principal architect of the Great Persecution launched in 303, the same year this coin begins its issue range.
