The reverse type follows the standard late Roman military gateway motif employed across multiple mints during the Valentinianic and Theodosian periods. The legend SPES RO-MANORVM is disposed around the type, reading 'Hope of the Romans,' an aspirational dynastic proclamation. The mint mark SMTR appears in the exergue, denoting the Sacra Moneta of Treveri (Augusta Treverorum). The strike is somewhat weak on the left side, consistent with hand-hammered production on a small, irregular bronze flan. |
