Flavius Victor was the young son of the usurper Magnus Maximus, elevated to co-emperor in 384 to shore up the regime's dynastic legitimacy. When Theodosius I defeated Maximus in 388, Victor was captured and executed — almost certainly still a child. The Arelate mint, one of the western empire's most active in this period, produced this issue during the roughly four years the city sat firmly under Maximus's control.
Victor's coinage is notably scarce relative to his father's, reflecting the brevity and instability of his nominal reign.
