Additional information

Crispus, eldest son of Constantine I, was elevated to Caesar in 317 alongside his half-brother Constantine II and the infant Licinius II — a calculated move by Constantine to consolidate dynastic legitimacy in the wake of renewed tensions with Licinius. This issue from Thessalonica belongs to the immediate aftermath of that elevation, with the plural CAESS NN formula acknowledging multiple Caesars simultaneously. Thessalonica had only recently come under firm Constantinian control, making its output in this period politically pointed rather than merely administrative.
