Struck at Thessalonica in the immediate aftermath of Constantine the Great's death in May 337, this issue belongs to the chaotic interregnum before his three surviving sons formally divided the empire. The GLORIA EXERCITUS type with a single standard between the two soldiers had just replaced the earlier two-standard version — a minor design shift that nonetheless serves as a precise chronological marker for numismatists working this period.
RIC VIII #58 places this firmly within the Thessalonica mint's early post-Constantinian output, a mint that remained administratively active through the subsequent civil conflict between Constantius II and his brother Constans.
