Struck at Thessalonica during the final years of Constantius II's sole rule, after he had eliminated his last rivals following the usurpation and death of Magnentius in 353. The SPES REIPVBLICE type — "hope of the republic" — was introduced empire-wide around 355 as a deliberate ideological reset, flooding the western mints with fresh bronze as Constantius reasserted central authority over a fractured administration.
RIC VIII 213 places this specifically within Thessalonica's output for that reign's closing phase. The mint operated continuously through the transition to Julian in 361.
