The SOLI INVICTO COMITI issues of Constantine I reflect a deliberate transitional theology — Sol Invictus retained as imperial companion at a moment when Constantine was already cultivating Christian support following the Edict of Milan in 313. Rome's mint was politically awkward territory for Constantine at this point; the city remained administratively under his control after Maxentius's defeat at the Milvian Bridge in 312, but he never returned to live there. RIC VII Rome 27 falls within the earliest post-Maxentian production, when the mint was being reorganized under new officina arrangements.
