RIC VII 97 belongs to a brief window when Constantine was consolidating sole control in the West following the defeat of Maxentius at the Milvian Bridge in 312. The Sol Invictus coinage from Rome's mint continued well into the 310s despite Constantine's gradual alignment with Christianity — a theological ambiguity he apparently saw no reason to resolve quickly. The Roma mint at this period was producing nummi under tight officina controls, and RIC VII 97 is assigned to a specific workshop sequence traceable by mintmark.
