The Ostia mint had an unusually short operational life — opened under Maxentius around 308–309 AD and closed permanently by Constantine shortly after his defeat of Maxentius at the Milvian Bridge in October 312. This piece falls right at that transition, struck either in the final months of the mint's existence or during its immediate post-battle continuation before Constantine shuttered it. RIC VI 83 is among the last issues attributable to Ostia, making the mint mark itself a timestamp of political consolidation.
