RIC VI 694 belongs to the opening phase of Constantine's long climb to sole rule, struck at Trier when he still held only the western provinces and needed every tool available to shore up legitimacy. The GENIO POPVLI ROMANI reverse type was the workhorse of Diocletianic and early Tetrarchic propaganda — Constantine's continued use of it in 307 was deliberate conservatism, signaling continuity with the Tetrarchic system even as that system was visibly fracturing after Galerius's failed invasion of Italy.
The S/A officina mark places this piece in a specific production sequence at Trier, one of the most productive mints of the period.
