The reverse legend GENIO - POP ROM is divided on either side of the figure, with the Londinium mintmark PLN inscribed in the exergue below. The scene is executed in the typical Constantinian workshop style of the Londinium mint. |

London's mint — reopened by Constantius I around 296 to support his reconquest of Britain from the usurper Allectus — was producing coins for Constantine I during a period of acute dynastic instability, when the Western empire was being contested by no fewer than six claimants simultaneously. Constantine had been proclaimed at York in 306 by his father's troops, a fait accompli that Galerius grudgingly legitimized by granting him the rank of Caesar rather than Augustus.
The PLN mintmark places this piece among London's earliest issues for Constantine, before the mint was abruptly closed around 325, never to reopen.
