The CONSTANTINOPOLIS commemorative series was struck beginning in 330 AD to mark the formal dedication of Constantinople as the new imperial capital — a city Constantine had been building for six years on the site of Greek Byzantium. Arelate was one of several western mints producing this type simultaneously, and the series ran only until around 333–334 before being discontinued, giving it an unusually compressed production window for a commemorative issue.
RIC VII 363 from Arelate is distinguished by its mint mark placement within that workshop's specific officina sequence.
