In 307, Constantinus held the rank of Caesar under the crumbling Tetrarchic system — a system his father Constantius I had served loyally but which was already fracturing under competing claims from Maxentius, Galerius, and Severus II. The Treveri mint, modern Trier, was one of the most productive western workshops of the period and the administrative heart of the Gallic territories Constantine effectively controlled in all but formal title.

RIC VI 725 is a relatively scarce number within the Treveri sequence for this reign phase, reflecting the compressed window before Constantine's elevation to Augustus later that same year.
