Constantine II received the title Caesar in 317 at roughly eighteen months old, making him one of the youngest recipients of that rank in imperial history. The PROVIDENTIAE AVGG coinage — invoking the foresight of the emperors, plural — was a deliberate propaganda exercise tying the young Caesar's legitimacy to his father Constantine I, both men named in the abbreviated genitive. Trier's mint was among the most productive in the western empire at this point, supplying the Rhine frontier armies with a steady bronze supply.
