| Reverse description | The youthful, nude figure of Taras, the eponymous founder of the city, seated astride a dolphin leaping to the left. He holds a kantharos (drinking vessel) extended in his right hand and grasps a distaff or torch in his raised left hand. A tall decorative cippus or torch-stand appears in the upper right field. The ethnic ΤΑΡΑΣ is inscribed in Greek characters in the lower field, flanked by the monogram ΤΑ beneath the dolphin. The finely modelled figure exemplifies the accomplished engraving tradition of Tarentine coinage. |
