Reverse description The eponymous hero Taras, nude, seated to the left astride a dolphin, holding a kantharos (wine cup) aloft in his outstretched right hand. A star or rosette ornament appears in the right field. The ethnic legend ΠΟΛΥ is inscribed in the upper right field, with ΤΑΡΑΣ divided across the lower field and exergue. The reverse emblem of Taras riding a dolphin is the defining type of Tarentine coinage, here rendered with fluid, accomplished craftsmanship.
