Obverse description Nude youth on horseback galloping to the right, wearing a crested helmet; the rider holds a palm branch in his raised left hand. A monogram appears in the left field. The legend ΑΡΙCΤΙΠΠΟC is inscribed in the exergue in Greek characters, identifying the magistrate Aristippos. The composition is rendered in a refined Hellenistic style characteristic of late Tarentine coinage.

Reverse description Taras, the mythological founder of the city, seated nude to the left astride a dolphin, holding a small Nike figure in his extended right hand and a kantharos in his left. In the upper right field, a monogram and a small owl are visible as secondary symbols. The ethnic legend ΤΑΡΑΣ appears in the lower field to the right, written in Greek. The finely modelled figure reflects the accomplished die-cutting tradition of the Tarentine mint.
