Obverse description Nude ephebe, helmeted, seated on horseback riding to right, grasping the reins in his right hand while bearing a small round shield and a lance in his left; the horse is depicted in a naturalistic style characteristic of Tarentine coinage. Below the horse, the Greek letter san (⊣) appears in the field as a control mark. The composition reflects the refined artistic tradition of Magna Graecia in the mid-fourth century BC.
