Tarentum's nomoi from the 340s BC were struck during a period of acute military pressure on the city — this is precisely when Tarentum called in the Spartan mercenary commander Archidamus III to defend against the Messapians and Lucanians pressing from the interior. The arrangement cost the city dearly in silver. Vlasto 448 falls within a well-documented obverse die sequence, and HN Italy 878 places it among issues likely produced under that military financing pressure rather than routine civic coinage.
