| Aanvullende informatie |
Thurii was founded in 444/3 BC as a Panhellenic colony on the site of destroyed Sybaris, with Herodotus among its early settlers. By the late fourth century the city was caught between the expansionist pressures of the Bruttians to the south and Rome to the north, eventually requesting Roman military assistance in 282 BC — a request that directly antagonized Tarentum and helped trigger the Pyrrhic War. Coins of this late series circulated through that entire catastrophe.
The mint reduced the weight standard progressively through this period, tracking the financial strain of near-continuous warfare. This piece falls within the reduced series documented under HN Italy 1899.
