| Reverse description | A large, prominent barley ear occupies the center of the field, rendered in high relief with detailed graining along the stalk and finely incised awns splaying outward at the top — the civic symbol of Metapontion. To the left of the stalk, a serpent rises in a coiled posture, serving as a secondary device. The ethnic legend ΜΕΤΑ appears divided around the stalk, with the magistrate's name ΦΙΛ inscribed in the field. The composition is characteristic of the high-quality engraving tradition of Lucanian Metapontion in the later fourth century BC. |
