| Obverse description | Taras, the eponymous founder of the city, depicted nude and seated astride a dolphin leaping to the left; he holds a crested Corinthian helmet outstretched in his right hand and a round shield and spear in his left. The dolphin is rendered in fine detail with a naturalistic tail and prominent eye. The ethnic legend TAPA appears in Greek characters along the lower exergual area. The composition is executed in the vigorous Early Classical style characteristic of Tarentine coinage of this period. |
