Metapontion's grain-heavy economy made its coinage almost inseparable from the agricultural rhythms of the Tarentine Gulf. The city had been a loyal Athenian ally during the Sicilian Expedition of 415–413 BC, and its subsequent prosperity — built on wheat exports to grain-hungry Greek poleis — funded a mint that remained among the most prolific in Magna Graecia through the fourth century. By the 340s, Metapontion was navigating the growing pressure of Lucanian encroachment, a slow territorial squeeze that would eventually strangle the city's hinterland and curtail production entirely within a few generations.
