Metapontion's silver nomoi of this period were struck at a weight standard derived from the Achaean colonies of southern Italy — a deliberate alignment with neighboring Kroton and Sybaris that reinforced trade networks across the Tarentine Gulf. The city's agricultural prosperity, built almost entirely on grain, underwrote a coinage remarkable for its consistency across decades of output.

Noe's die study identified considerable variation within the 390–403 range, with multiple obverse dies showing progressive stages of engraver refinement rather than replacement after failure.
