| Beschrijving voorzijde | Facing barley ear (hordeum vulgare) depicted in high relief, with a full, detailed head of grain at centre and six radiating stalks fanning symmetrically to either side, conveying the agricultural identity and prosperity of the colony. The ethnic legend ΜΕΤΑ is distributed in the field, with letters flanking the stalks to left and right. The entire design is enclosed within a plain inner border surrounded by a beaded outer border, characteristic of early South Italian coinage. The finely articulated grain kernels and precisely rendered awns reflect the accomplished die-cutting associated with the Achaean colonies of Magna Graecia during the late Archaic period. |
