Reverse description A prominent barley ear occupies the central field, depicted with finely engraved, naturalistically rendered grains and a leafy stalk — the enduring civic emblem of Metapontion, celebrated for its agricultural wealth. To the left of the barley ear, the ethnic inscription ΜΕΤΑ is arranged vertically in retrograde Greek letters. The composition is balanced and the engraving exhibits the high standard associated with the Metapontine workshop of this period. The flan is irregular and slightly concave, consistent with incuse-tradition coinage ancestry.
