Reverse description A large barley ear occupies the full length of the reverse field, rendered in high relief with prominent grains along the central stalk and flanking leaves fanning outward — the civic emblem of Metapontion, a city whose agricultural prosperity depended on grain cultivation. A small figure, likely a seated deity or Meta, appears to the lower left of the stalk. The ethnic legend METAΠON is inscribed along the right side of the field in Greek characters, reading upward beside the ear. A secondary stalk with leaves is visible to the right, further emphasising the agrarian iconographic programme of this important Lucanian mint.
