Obverse description Ear of barley depicted upright in high relief, its stem rising vertically through the centre of the flan with prominent rounded grains arranged symmetrically along both sides. The stalk is flanked by diagonal scored lines suggesting stylised leaves or additional ears. The Greek ethnic legend ΜΕΤΑ appears to the left of the central motif in archaic Greek characters. The design is contained within a plain linear border, characteristic of the early Archaic coinage of Metapontum.

Reverse description Incuse ear of barley rendered in the Pythagorean incuse technique, mirroring the obverse type in intaglio relief. The grain-bearing head of the ear occupies the centre of the field, with individual grain spikelets rendered in fine detail and flanked on either side by diagonal incuse bands representing subsidiary stalks or leaves. The surrounding field is framed by a toothed or cable border formed by the incuse punch, a hallmark of early South Italian Achaean coinage. No legend appears on the reverse.
