Lokroi Epizephyrioi occupied an unusual position among the Greek colonies of southern Italy — founded by Locrians from central Greece around 700 BC, the city claimed a constitution reputedly codified by Zaleukos, often cited as the earliest written Greek law code. Whether Zaleukos was historical or mythologized by later writers remains genuinely contested. The city maintained close ties with Syracuse and, unlike many neighboring poleis, survived the catastrophic aftermath of the Pyrrhic Wars with its civic institutions largely intact.
The SNG ANS 526 variety distinction matters here: small die differences within this series affect collector value significantly and reward careful die-axis examination.
