Reverse description Taras, the eponymous founder of the city, depicted nude and seated astride a dolphin leaping to the left, holding a palm branch in his right hand and a kantharos or small object in his left; a helmet appears to the right in the field. The magistrate's ethnic and symbol are rendered in the exergue and field: ΤΑΡΑΣ in the exergue and ΣΥΜ in the lower field. The composition exemplifies the characteristic Tarentine reverse type combining civic mythology with fine Hellenistic craftsmanship.
