Obverse description Taras, nude, astride a dolphin swimming to the right, his left arm extended outward while his right hand rests upon the creature's back. The retrograde ethnic legend ΤΑΡΑϞ appears to the left of the figure, with a scallop shell depicted in the lower field beneath the dolphin. The entire design is enclosed within a dot-and-cable border, characteristic of the early archaic coinage of Tarentum. The rendering of the figure exhibits the bold, stylised quality of late 6th-century BC South Italian die-engraving.
