Philip the Handsome was thirteen years old when these nobles were struck, with his aunt Maximilian of Austria's regent council effectively running Holland after the death of Mary of Burgundy in 1482. The regency itself was politically fractious — Flemish and Hollandish cities had been in open conflict with Maximilian over guardianship of the young duke, and 1487 marked the year Maximilian was briefly imprisoned by the citizens of Bruges.
The extreme fineness of .995 is notable even by noble standards, exceeding the more common .986 used in comparable Burgundian issues of the period.
