Obverse description Confronting head of a roaring lion rendered in high relief, facing left, with open jaws revealing teeth, a prominent round eye, and a mane depicted by bold radiating striations across the neck and forehead. A small seal (phoke), the civic badge of Phokaia, appears in the right field adjacent to the lion's head. The design is executed in the archaic Ionian style characteristic of early electrum coinage from the region.

Reverse description Plain quadripartite incuse square deeply impressed into the flan, divided by raised ridges into four unequal rectangular compartments of varying depth. The incuse punch is irregular in outline, consistent with early archaic hammered coinage technique, with no additional devices or inscriptions present in the field.
