Siemens Nixdorf Informationssysteme AG produced test notes like this one for calibrating and certifying currency-handling machines — cash counters, sorters, ATM validators — rather than for any monetary purpose. The firm, formed by the 1990 merger of Siemens' data systems division with Nixdorf Computer AG, was at the time one of Europe's largest producers of banking automation equipment, and internally produced standardized test media to verify optical and mechanical sensors across its product lines.
"Musterbanknote" simply means specimen or sample banknote in German. These were never intended to leave the engineering environment.
