Additional information

Benedict XIV — Prospero Lambertini — was among the more intellectually serious occupants of the papal throne, but his finances were not. The Papal States ran chronic deficits through the 1740s, and the muraiola issues of this period reflect a treasury managing copper demand with the thinnest viable silver content. At .250 fine, these billon pieces sat at the practical floor of what could still be called silver coinage without provoking immediate public rejection.

Munt#158 and 159 record discrete die variants across the issue's four-year span, a small detail that repays attention when attributing individual pieces.
