| Obverse description | Four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform fashion around the central square hole, reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left in the traditional manner. The upper and lower positions bear 常 (Sang) and 平 (Pyong) respectively, referencing the Sangpyeong Office (Joseon Dynasty's agency overseeing currency), while the right and left positions carry 通 (Tong) and 寶 (Bo), together forming the inscription 常平通寶 ('Sangpyeong Tongbo'), meaning 'Everflowing Treasure Currency.' The characters are rendered in regular script (kaishu) in low relief against a flat field, within a plain raised rim. The square hole is framed by a raised inner rim, a hallmark of East Asian cast cash coinage. |
