Appendu à un accord passé entre les marchands
de Paris et ceux de Rouen touchant la vente du
sel en grève.
Le symbole du plus puissant des corps de métiers
parisiens, les "nautes" ou "marchands de l'eau"
qui monopolisaient l'approvisionnement de Paris
par voie fluviale, devint les armes de la ville
lorsque l'administration passa entre leurs mains.
C'est ainsi que, jusqu'au XVIIIe siècle, l'ancien
Hôtel de Ville de Paris s'appelait communément
la Marchandise de l'eau.
