Obverse description Crowned equestrian figure of King Afonso II facing right, depicted in a stylized Romanesque manner, holding a sword aloft in the right hand and a shield on the left arm, mounted on a prancing horse. The design is executed in bold, somewhat crude relief typical of early Portuguese hammered coinage. A linear inner circle frames the central device, with the surrounding field filled by the Gothic majuscule legend. The whole is enclosed within a beaded outer border.
