Obverse description The central device depicts the famous Lion of Belfort sculpture by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, shown in high relief in a rocky setting with foliage in the background. The legend BELFORT arcs along the upper periphery and CITÉ DU LION along the lower periphery, separated by decorative dot ornaments. A small inscription referencing the siege of Belfort 1870 appears on the base of the lion.

The peripheral legend bears the word France rendered in eight languages in various scripts, separated by tilde ornaments.
