Sayaji Rao Gaekwad II ruled Baroda under increasingly tight British oversight — the East India Company had imposed a subsidiary alliance on the state in 1802, stationing British troops in Baroda and effectively controlling its foreign policy. Gold coinage from this period reflects one of the few remaining expressions of princely prerogative the Gaekwads retained. The "cf." designation in the KM reference indicates this piece diverges from the catalogued type in some respect — likely a die variety, mint mark placement, or weight standard — without warranting a fully independent listing.
