| Beschrijving keerzijde | A large, bound cornucopia (horn of plenty) depicted upright and centrally, tied with a royal diadem whose streamers fall at the sides. The horn is filled with abundance: a prominent grain ear projects from the mouth, accompanied by a pyramidal cake and pomegranate, while a bunch of grapes hangs pendulously from the left side of the rim. The Greek legend ΒΕΡΕΝΙΚΗΣ ΒΑΣΙΛΙΣΣΗΣ is disposed in two lines around the device, identifying the piece as an issue in the name of Queen Berenice. The composition is emblematic of Ptolemaic royal ideology, associating the queen with divine fertility and prosperity. |
