The central field features a stylised architectural or monogrammatic motif enclosed within a beaded inner circle, surrounded by an uncial Latin legend reading NOVI CASTRI, meaning 'of the new castle,' punctuated by a cross and a floral ornament. The overall design faithfully recalls the hammered coinage style of the medieval County of Neuchâtel. |

Neuchâtel's civic millennium commemoration marks the city's founding reference of 1011, when Holy Roman Emperor Henry II granted the site its name in a charter — "Novum Castellum," the new castle. The canton itself had a peculiarly split loyalty for centuries, simultaneously a Prussian principality and a Swiss canton from 1815 until the republican revolution of 1848 finally severed the Hohenzollern connection.
Louis de Neuchâtel, count from 1343 to 1373, issued the original denarius being recalled here — a minor feudal coinage of limited reach.
