Reverse description The reverse presents a faithful replica of the medieval denarius of Louis de Neuchâtel, struck in a bimetallic composition with a raised inner die reproducing the archaic design of the original coin. The central field features a stylised architectural or monogrammatic motif enclosed within a beaded inner circle, surrounded by an uncial Latin legend reading NOVI CASTRI, meaning 'of the new castle,' punctuated by a cross and a floral ornament. The overall design faithfully recalls the hammered coinage style of the medieval County of Neuchâtel.

Additional information

Neuchâtel's civic millennium commemoration marks the city's founding reference of 1011, when Holy Roman Emperor Henry II granted the site its name in a charter — "Novum Castellum," the new castle. The canton itself had a peculiarly split loyalty for centuries, simultaneously a Prussian principality and a Swiss canton from 1815 until the republican revolution of 1848 finally severed the Hohenzollern connection.

Louis de Neuchâtel, count from 1343 to 1373, issued the original denarius being recalled here — a minor feudal coinage of limited reach.
