Obverse description Facing bust of the Virgin Mary (Theotokos) depicted orans, with both hands raised in the gesture of prayer, wearing a maphorion and nimbate crown adorned with pellets. The effigy is rendered in the hieratic Byzantine style with a dotted inner border framing the field. The Marian monogram abbreviation appears in the upper field to either side of the nimbus, identifying the figure as the Mother of God.
