Justinian's silver miliarense issues are comparatively scarce against his prolific gold and bronze output — the tremissis and solidus dominated long-distance trade, while the follis handled daily exchange, leaving the miliarense occupying an awkward middle denomination that saw limited practical circulation. Many surviving examples show surprisingly little wear as a result.
The bust-left orientation on this type follows a convention reserved for specific ceremonial or hierarchical distinctions within Byzantine numismatic protocol, though its precise administrative significance remains debated among specialists. DOC I places it firmly within the early-to-middle portion of Justinian's reign, before the monetary disruptions accompanying the plague of 541–549.
