Obverse description Central field dominated by a large Gothic letter 'F', the initial of King Fernando I, surmounted by a royal crown with trefoil finials. Two six-pointed rosettes flank the crowned initial in the field, one to the left and one to the right. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding circular legend reads FERNANDVS REX PORTVGALI, identifying the issuing monarch.
