Obverse description Central device consists of the Portuguese royal arms — a quartered shield displaying the quinas (five escutcheons charged with bezants) and castle towers — surmounted by an open crown. The shield occupies the majority of the field and is rendered in a bold, late-medieval hammered style. A beaded inner circle surrounds the central device, with a partial Latin legend distributed around the periphery. The mint mark 'C' for Ceuta is visible to the left of the shield within the legend band. The flan is characteristically irregular in shape, as typical of hammered gold coinage of the period.
